Punta Dufour: on the roof of Monte Rosa - Gressoney

Climb up to 4634 meters and admire the view of the Alps

Dufour

The Monte Rosa Massif and its 21 peaks above 4,000 meters represent a real challenge for all mountaineering lovers.

Among the most difficult and challenging ascents is the ascent to Punta Dufour, which at 4634 meters takes second place among the highest peaks in Europe.

The easiest and least strenuous approach is by cable car from Staffal to the Indren station. From here, across the glacier of the same name, continue to the Mantova and Gnifetti refuges, stopover points as well as true panoramic balconies of Monte Rosa.

Departing at dawn, you follow the Italian normal route across Punta Zumstain 4563 meters. During the climb, you are treated to a unique view of the highest wall in the Alps: The East Face of Monte Rosa. Once past the Zumstain, you attack a steep and exposed descent to the Pope Col and then ascend the aerial ridge leading to the summit cross.

Sections are presented that require a good knowledge of rock climbing techniques and the use of alpine equipment. However, the panoramic view during the ascent repays any effort. Ascending via the Italian route is also an opportunity to admire the beauty of alpine nature and to appreciate the challenge of conquering the highest peak of Monte Rosa.

To ensure adequate safety during the ascent, it is advisable to hire an experienced mountain guide, who will be able to lead you along the route and provide valuable support.
