A rescue intervention on the slopes that saved a life

On the afternoon of Saturday 23 February, the timeliness of an intervention and the coordination between the rescuers saved the life of a skier who collapsed on a slope due to acute pain which turned out to be a heart attack.

The rescue service on the slope was advised by a user who had assisted at the scene and, in the meantime, a mountain guide who was just passing and understood the seriousness of the situation intervened and performed first aid. In a short matter of time, a Monterosa Ski ski patroller and two State Police officers from a police station distant from the ski resort arrived. Thanks to the coordination and training of these professionals and the availability of medical equipment such as the defibrillator, a life was saved.

The incident happened on the return slope to the town, an area where helicopter rescue isn’t possible. Hence, the medical staff that had arrived in Champoluc by helicopter was quickly taken to the area where the event had happened by ambulance and snowmobile. Having stabilised the patient, he was then taken to the Parini Hospital in Aosta by helicopter where he underwent emergency heart surgery which he survived.

Monterosa thanks all those who intervened in this case as well as all of those who work with the goal of protecting the skiers who come to our mountains every day: the ski patrollers from the cableway ski stations, the detachments from the State Police, the Carabinieri and the Forest Rangers are the professionals who work to guarantee safety on the slopes everyday.
