Discovering an enchanted place: Sacro Monte di Varallo

One of a kind and a UNESCO heritage site since 2003, Sacro Monte di Varallo is a symbol of industriousness, devotion, high artistic abilities and craftsmanship. The hands of thousand artisans from valley gave it life over the course of almost four centuries. It is the oldest of the nine Sacri Monti built on the Alps in Piemonte and Lombardia, and overlooks the city of Varallo from the top of a rocky spur surrounded by a green and wide natural park.

One of the most popular destinations for cultural tourism in Valsesia

Varallo Sesia rises along the banks of the Sesia river and is divided into two parts by Mastallone river, its tributary, which separates the historic center, called Varallo Vecchio, from the more recent areas. The grandiose monumental complex of the Sacro Monte di Varallo offers suggestive views over the city and on the entire Valsesia.

The steepest cable car in Europe

Sacro Monte can be reached with the very steep blue cableway that leaves from the center of Varallo, and which in just over a minute connects the city with the site. Inaugurated on August 28 1935, and reopened in 2002 after a period of inactivity, this cable car is a real gem of technology: it is the steepest cable car in Europe.

Panoramic trip over the city of Varallo

The journey, with a maximum capacity of 15 people at a time, lasts about 107 seconds; it covers a distance of about 200 m with a difference in height of 137 m, sometimes reaching a slope of 100%. The cabins are also enabled for the transport of people with disabilities or in wheelchairs.

Here timetable and price.

The Guides propose guided tours and suggestive theatrical performances upon reservation, to tell its story and thrill the viewer.
