Sacro Monte of Varallo: guided Tours for an extraordinary experience among art, architecture and landscape

Contemporary spirituality can be experienced and explored in an extraordinary context, in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sacro Monte of Varallo, located between Milan and Turin, in an ideal setting at the foot of Monte Rosa, is a place to be discovered for its art, architecture and landscape thanks to the new experiential tour offered by Kalatà. The route, the guided tour inside this fascinating place, suspended in time and space, begins with the thrill of a journey on the steepest cablecar in Europe which, from the village of Varallo, takes you to the entrance of the Sacro Monte in just a few minutes, flying over a breathtaking view embracing the Valsesia and Monte Rosa. From here begins the walk through the beauty of a monumental “artistic crèche” to be discovered among the many chapels.

The Sacro Monte was founded in the late 1400s to allow everyone to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, through a meticulous replica of its places.

After the Council of Trento, Cardinal Carlo Borromeo made this “New Jerusalem” the model for his pastoral plan to oppose the spread of Protestantism, enhancing it with sculptures and frescoes inspired by the holy narration.

Today the Sacro Monte of Varallo counts 45 chapels, palaces, squares, streets, fountains, green areas and woods, the result of a work of talents and masters over time, from Gaudenzio Ferrari to Galeazzo Alessi.
