Gressoney is a privileged destination for lovers of ski mountaineering and the venue of great competitions such as the legendary Mezzalama Trophy Ski mountaineering can be practised for a good seven months of the year from November to June. The great variety of itineraries mean that everyone can find routes which meet their skiing and athletic skill levels: from climbs lasting a couple of hours on open slopes to routes taking days on the Monterosa glaciers. Many summits of over 4,000 metres can be reached on skis in the spring and summer with the option of staying in the Mantova and Gnifetti mountain refuges or the legendary Capanna Margherita, at an altitude of 4,554 metres on the Gnifetti Peak, the highest mountain refuge in Europe.
