Valle di Gressoney

Gressoney-La-Trinité

Gastaldi Bivouac

Trail 3

By: Gressoney Monterosa

Route category: Walk

Duration: 3 hours

Difficulty: Medium

Bivacco Gastaldi

The starting point for this hike is the square in front of the Wongade Restaurant, located on the right-hand side of the regional road, about 400 metres before the Punta Jolanda chairlift.

The first part of the trail, which is quite steep, meanders through a dense larch forest and then reaches a small clearing, where you cross to the right to circumvent a high rock face above which is the Spilmannsberg mountain pasture. After skirting a series of avalanche barriers, you arrive near a beautiful white hut from where there is an excellent view of the town of Gressoney-La-Trinité. The itinerary then turns diagonally to the left, crossing beautiful mountain pastures, before reaching a rocky slope that is overcome with the aid of a fixed rope. In a short time, you will reach the beautiful tin bivouac that can accommodate up to 4 people. This is an ideal place for those seeking tranquillity in direct contact with nature. In front of the bivouac stands the Netschò glacier, which has two beautiful small lakes at its foot. As this is a protected area, it is not difficult to spot specimens of the local fauna, such as chamois, ibex, marmots or the occasional royal eagle.

In order not to take the same route as the ascent, the descent can take place along other trails to form a sort of loop. Starting from the bivouac, follow trail no. 3 downhill to the end of the steep section equipped with a fixed rope. Here, turn right along trail no. 3A, which passes by the hut of the Skeärpie alpine pasture before continuing on to the Gabiet lake. When you reach the dam of this reservoir, descend into the valley below on trail no. 4, which takes you back from which you started out.
